A much deeper metaphorical meaning

Downfall 2012

Thank you for taking the time to talk to us! Let’s dive right in shall we?

Absolutely!

Where did your name come from? I’m sure you’ve been asked that question many times. Does it have to do with the mayan calendar?

Originally yes.  Growing up I was fascinated/terrified by all of the projected and passed “dooms days”.  At the time,  2012 was the most intriguing.   I was especially drawn in by the fact that literally every mention of 2012’s “apocalypse” was described “the end of the world as we know it” suggesting there would be a new beginning of some sort.  Downfall 2012 has been around a long time.  While the literal connection with the name and the Mayan prediction held strong relevance initially,  over the span of this band’s lifetime, we’ve found a very strong metaphoric relevance which has driven us to hold on to the name post 2012 and beyond.

The first thing I noticed when I went through your available catalog on Spotify, is that you don’t seem to fit in any predefined genre-boxes. I like that! How do you describe your music?

Purged pop alternative punk metal. 🙂

You seem to bounce between metal, funk and even hip-hop, with a few unidentifiable elements as well. What genres and artists inspire you most?

The three of us have very different tastes.  We can all agree on a very limited selection, but I think our strength is in our differences. Boo is really into metal,  prog metal,  post hardcore and punk. Casey comes more from reggae, reggae rock, jazz, alternative, singer songwriter stuff.  And me (Danny) I’m into specific hip hop, industrial,  old and new metal,  and pop. Believe it or not lol.

Your music has a lot of energy to it. Do you write it with a live set in mind?

Not really,  though we certainly keep in the back of our mind that we’re going to have to pull this off live eventually lol.  We just let it loose and often write at our abilities thresholds, which is good and bad. …then… we monotonously work in the studio until we have something that we can recreate on stage.

While listening to your most recent release (Every man for himself: issue 2, 2013) I was surprised it ended after 23 minutes. When I started working my way back through your catalog, I noticed most of your releases are that short. Why is that?

They are part of a story that was intended to be a series of EPs.  We got incredibly busy with touring and other projects,  post Everyman For Himself 2, and just couldn’t get the next parts complete. So… the next release will be a full length. It will compile the majority of the Everyman story with the concluding, unreleased material, and it will be available very very soon.

Can you tell us a bit about the tracks on your latest release?

The 6 tracks are all sequentially in order to tell the continued story that began with the prior release “Everyman for himself: Issue 1” Each track has a literal connection to the story, while containing a much deeper metaphorical meaning as well.

The album opens with a real tongue twister, in the song gone for now. A cascade of words! Have you tried to play that song live yet? Is it even doable?

Doable but definitely a rare choice for our shows.  Maybe we’ll throw it in next tour!

Two years since your last release is a long time. Are you planning on releasing new material any time soon?

Yes.  We’re way past due.  As stated earlier we will be concluding the Everyman story in the next few months through the release of a full length.  In addition, we’re writing like crazy now. So we’re hoping for an entirely new record late 2016/early 2017.

What will this year look like for Downfall 2012

New music,  some video stuff as well. And definitely touring.  So basically all the things every good hardworking band out there should be doing! 😉 lol

Any last words for our readers?
