Tides of Omniscience

Miasmal

The first thing I had ever heard about Miasmal was that they are a death metal band from Gothenburg, Sweden. Now, as I’m sure all metal fans probably know, Gothenburg was the melodic death metal capital of the world during the 90’s, so I was expecting Miasmal to be very much in that style. What I heard was quite different. This is definitely death metal, but it sounds more like the punch-to-the-face style of bands like Grave and early Entombed instead of the melodic style of bands like At the Gates and Dark Tranquillity. I don’t normally go for death metal, but I found myself really enjoying this album a lot. There’s actually a lot of variety on here (something that unfortunately cannot be said for a lot of death metal bands). Tempo range from typical death metal style blast-beats, to thrash metal, to a more mid-paced groove; “Perseverance” is even more of a slow doomy type song. Another thing that stands out to me are the guitar solos, which are both melodic and technical at the same time and would leave many guitarists picking their jaws up off the floor. The only negative I really have to say about this album is that the bass is barely audible to me for the most part. Overall though, Miasmal’s ‘Tides of Omniscience’ is definitely one of the better extreme metal albums that I’ve listened to in recent times.

My favorite song is “The Pilgrimage”, which starts off having a galloping power metal style rhythm and turns into a slow heavy groove at the end. I’m also pretty sure that the bell that I hear ringing near the end is the same one that Obituary uses in the beginning of “Slowly We Rot”.
