you are playing fucking Thrash Metal!

Mortal Strike

How did the band start?

We started out rather spontaneous very late in 2009 while sitting in my old apartment living room. Beer might have been involved. We found a rehearsal room farily quickly and then it just went uphill from there. [We] played a private New Year party for fun in a friend’s living room just after that. Basically we all always had the urge to make music, and it sort of happened very quickly after that one night.

How were you inspired to form a metal band?

Well… We all had been listening to metal for the majority of our lives, and heavy metal isn’t just more than a simple music taste it’s pure passion and a way of life, without sounding to cheesy. There was never any sort of discussion if we were going to do heavy metal or something else. The fact that we play thrash metal came a bit later, as a matter of fact. Our very early songs were more speedy, heavy, some even a tiny bit power-orientated. But quickly we started playing better, individually and together, so naturally the songs became more complex and faster. I remember one of our first concerts where a good friend named Fladi told us:”You can turn it any way you want, you are playing fucking thrash metal!” And as you might see, nothing has changed there.

What difference do you feel between the ’80s thrash metal scene and today’s?

Since I was born in ’86, I can’t tell you anything on a personal experienced standpoint, but for me it at least seems like the values of the music hasn’t changed. Fast, hard, loud, straight in your face! And for me it’s one of the greatest aspects of it. Thrash has always been a very honest, no-bullshit style of metal, and I fucking love it! There may be a stronger focus on equipment, sound and quality of recordings these days than there were in the early 80’s, but that’s a given with today’s technology. I for one still love the raw sound of the ’80s.

Are you satisfied with the performance of your last album, For the Loud and the Aggressive?

If you mean production wise and the quality of the written material, I think we did the very best we were able to do with our resources and abilities. We are very proud of it and very satisfied with the final product. I believe that the many reviews we have gotten from all over the world speak very loudly for the quality of our album, with almost all reviews hitting at least 7.5 or higher out of 10.  If you mean sales and so on, there will always be room for improvement in that sector I believe. Since we are unsigned and do all promoting, merchandising and shipping and so on ourselves.

Did people from your country receive it well, or was your album was criticized for any reason?

Austria is not really a big thrash country. There are about 10 known bands in the whole country, so reactions from sites and magazines have been scarce. The ones we have gotten have been very positive though.  The people that have bought it and see us at shows fucking love it, and that is what really counts!

If a record label wants you to change your sound for their sake, will you?

Fuck no! If for any damn reason we should ever change our sound, it will be because we think it is the right thing to do. No other reason!

Any future plans related to growth of the band?

We are going on Tour this year with our friends from TULSADOOM, playing festivals in Hungary,Austria and Germany. It’s what we strive for: bigger stages, bigger crowds, and seeing how far we can get. We have a lot of things planed, but I won’t give away all of it. However material is being written at a good pace for the next album, and we are very looking forward to it°

Any message for the metal bands who are still searching for just a chance one chance to prove themselves..

Keep at it, there will always be setbacks, but keep at it! And be careful, a lot of people will try and take advantage. Stay smart and give it 100!

Last one, Metal for money, being famous, rebellion, or passion?

The first line has been and will always be passion for the music we make! If we can get to the big stages and big crowds and show people our music by doing so, that would be a dream come true!
